iphoned

done. got it. no more stress, no more speculation, i can finally just mess with the one in my pocket. first impressions:

the interface is insane, makes every other mobile device look and feel like a cruel joke.

i'm already typing fairly fast with my thumbs, maybe a little faster than i could on the numeric keyboard of my old phone.

call quality is fine, not amazing but not horrible (even with a mumbling skyper from aotearoa).

it's so sleek, feels like there is nothing in my pocket.

the camera is nice, as long as there's *lots* of light and *nothing* is moving.

music and movies are great, it's a freaking ipod after all.

the headphone jack sucks. it's so recessed in the case i can't fit my nice etymotic research headphone plug in there. it totally has to be a skinny, in-line plug, a la:

overall, it's an amazing device. the shortcomings are easily forgotten when you start browsing around the phone and seamlessly send an email with a picture you just took attached while listening to music that fades out so you can take a call and then keep talking while you look up directions to the restaurant on google maps.

anyway, probably plenty more about this thing will be found among the hallowed halls of this needless weblog. speaking of weblogs, let us now observe a moment of silence for the weblog generated with my previous cellphone, may it rest in peace...

about that line for the iphone...

the first dude in line is a professional line-sitter:

more info at gizmodo.

this revelation coupled with the news that apple is allowing two phones per customer definitely relieves some of my fear of low inventory.

my fast got tagged

friday can't come soon enough

i just want the freaking ihype to stop. all i think about is whether or not it's worth it to get in line for the stupid iphone... there's already idiots in line, which bodes ill for that strategy, but maybe there won't be that many in line cuz it's super expensive for a freaking phone, but maybe i can be saved some pain and the danger of not getting one due to sellout by simply ordering it online, but it would be super cool to have one right from day one... ARGH! this is so ridiculous, being a self-aware macaddict is a painful existence. it's useless to devote this much thought and money to a piece of electronics but it's so, so pretty...

finnish buildings

we saw Architecture In Helsinki saturday night. i've never really listened to them, so i only recognized one song, but they were fantastic performers. very engaging, very enthusiastic and they definitely have a signature sound that they're developing which goes a long way towards making a show interesting.

the openers were decidedly mediocre. one-man band Yacht had tons of energy and a definite rapport with some of the audience but the music was very average. A.R.E. Weapons and Jamie Lidell have done it before and better. on the flipside, Still Flyin' had a bajillion band members, half of which seemed half-asleep for their set. and they basically play ska. 1996 all over again, dancing guy included. do they think we forgot about The Mighty Mighty Bosstones already?

summary: go see Architecture In Helsinki, but don't worry about getting there in time to catch the openers.

mashed

saturday was so awesome. jarrett came down from nikeland and we went to see the world premiere of the mash sf movie. i got to meet a bunch of cool new people and i got super excited about fixed-gear bicycles. a little too excited, perhaps. possibly also a little drunk. we may never know...

anyway, i can definitely recommend the DVD for purchase or netflix-queuing when it is released. very cool to watch, feels all tough and raw like old skate videos. riding one of those bikes is really fun - big up to todd for letting me book around the block on his, despite my allegedly being somewhat inebriated. pretty awesome to outrun cars on a city street in like three pedal pushes.

one of jarrett's homies was there from japan and i made it onto his weblog as well:

i'm famous.

crunchy

ever eat part of your own tooth? i did last night. whilst snacking on some delicious trail mix i started to munch on some rather hard bits. i imagined it was a bit of hard seed or shell that had found its way into the bag. shortly thereafter, i noticed one molar was a little smaller and a lot sharper than it used to be. upon further inspection, that tooth was confirmed broken, missing a corner and a rather sickly grey in coloration.

oops.

kids, go to the dentist regularly. just because you brush your teeth and none of them hurt, don't assume they aren't rotting away in your skull.

post script: the first place i called to get an appointment discussed my symptoms, took my name and then informed me they were booked solid until october. october? shouldn't that have been the first thing communicated?

privacy, schmivacy

i've heard some whining about google street view being an invasion of privacy. how's that? they're driving around public roads taking low-resolution pictures during daylight hours... the best way to protect one's privacy? don't be weird in public!

at least keep your pants halfway on.

pocket monster

this one is exceedingly juvenile, it came into being out of necessity through sheer force of boredom and as the only logical means of expressing agreement via email. let us now hang our heads in shame and slowly walk away...
