The following tirade is brought to you by a 50 something Christian:

Not all of the previous generation of Christians are ultra-conservative, politically aggressive poop heads. There are a lot of them quietly giving their lives to serving Christ and making His Body stable and functional around the world. The Church is so much more than the American media portrays it to be! Why can't we all just get the job done and quit sniping at each other? Counter what you don't like with your life and work and let that be the influence on people who don't know what Christianity is all about. 35 years ago it was my generation who were sure we had the revolutionare new answers. We were the "Jesus Freaks". Some of us never did re-enter the mainstream and follow the leaders like sheep into the political arena.

A question I have is what is the young Mr. Bakker telling people about sin and redemption?

Sorry Matt I have to disagree with you here, I looked into this before I saw your post. After checking his web site and some of the sources he uses you might think otherwise about this guy. Though he may have it right about the politics his understanding of the actual Jesus is limited by liberal theology which throws out the real person of Christ. He has a sermon on his site in which he uses a guy named Spong as one of his sources, this page has a few of spong's quotes - http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/j/john_shelby_spong.html - check it out. One last thing - this guy and the emergent church guys are quick to call out publically what they don't like without checking it with scripture or entering correct dialogue with those who offend them. He may be right about the same radicals I have a hard time with but neither is he preaching the true Christ or Christianity.

What is life if we can't have the open forum for ideas? I hope there is a sea change in the apparent mainstream of Christianity because it is not compassionate enough, not inclusive enough and not loving enough. On the other hand, I personally know Christians who are giving their time, their personal security, their health and their very lives in order to save the lives and souls of helpless and dying people here and around the world.

We need all kinds of preachers and congregations, but we have to follow the Bible if we want people to have true redemption. We can't make it fit our ideas---our ideas have to conform to it. Bishop Spong has attacked the Bible consistently for years, even referring to it as sinful. I wouldn't want to be him!
